“We at Marimekko believe that a successful future can be built by doing things together and crossing boundaries open-mindedly. Therefore, throughout 2017, the 100th anniversary of Finland’s independence, we will encourage participation in and create opportunities for innovation. For this reason, we partnered up with Slush and Junction, and invited younger generation creators to challenge the traditional conventions of our textile and fashion industry and develop fresh new ideas at the Marimekko Designathon competition.
“The jury was amazed by bold innovativeness of the teams’ pitches that connected consumers with authentic value-driven storytelling through technological concepts and solutions utilizing virtual and augmented reality technologies. We are very excited to continue the exploration of these ideas further with the chosen finalist teams,” says Tiina Alahuhta-Kasko, President and CEO of Marimekko.
The 51 participants representing 18 different nationalities were selected among hundreds of applicants to take part in the Marimekko Designathon competition.
Marimekko organised the competition in collaboration with Slush, Europe’s leading event for technology and start-ups, and Junction, the largest hackathon in Europe, which provided participants with the latest VR and AR technologies. The event was part of the Helsinki Design Week.
