MARIMEKKO PUBLISHES ITS SUSTAINABILITY STRATEGY EXTENDING TO THE YEAR 2020

Marimekko Corporation, Press release, 16 June 2016 at 10.00 a.m.

Marimekko has published its sustainability strategy extending to the year 2020. In drawing up the new sustainability strategy, the results from surveys of the company's various stakeholders were figured in along with data collected on industry trends and megatrends. Marimekko's sustainability strategy is crystallised in five commitments:

  • designing timeless, long-lasting, and functional products
  • inspiring and engaging customers and staff
  • promoting responsible practices throughout supply chain
  • resource efficiency and taking care of the environment
  • offering an inspiring and responsible workplace

"Our value of 'Fairness to everyone and everything' conveys the core of Marimekko's sustainability thinking. We want to be proud of what we do and we require ethical and responsible operations of both ourselves and our partners. Like everything we do, our sustainability is also based on long-lasting and timeless design. Our products are designed to withstand time. There is still a great deal to do in our sector to improve, for example, sustainability and transparency in supply chain, but through collaboration between the industry’s operators, steps are constantly being taken towards a sustainable future. Sustainability offers many opportunities, for example, in respect of more sustainable and more environmentally benign raw materials," says Marimekko’s President and CEO Tiina Alahuhta-Kasko.

One of Marimekko's main targets is to increase the share of sustainable cotton and other more sustainable materials in its products and packaging. Also, the company focuses, for instance, efforts on training its personnel in sustainability issues and aims for a 50 percent reduction in the carbon dioxide emissions of its own production.

The sustainability strategy as well as the company’s sustainability review for 2015 are available on the Marimekko website at www.company.marimekko.com/sustainability
