Stora Enso to support the John Nurminen Foundation’s Baltic Sea projects

Helsinki, Finland, 2016-01-27 08:00 CET -- STORA ENSO OYJ PRESS RELEASE 27 January 2016 at 9.00 EET

Stora Enso has signed a three-year agreement with the John Nurminen Foundation to support the Foundation’s Clean Baltic Sea projects.

“Through our co-operation with the John Nurminen Foundation we want to contribute to the protection of biodiversity in the Baltic Sea,” says Seppo Parvi, Stora Enso’s Country Manager in Finland. “Stora Enso has operations in all of the countries around the Baltic Sea, so the vitality of the sea is a prerequisite for our global success.”

"We are glad to have Stora Enso among our main corporate partners,” says Juha Nurminen, founder and Chairman of the Board at John Nurminen Foundation. “For the continuity of our operations it is important that we are supported by dedicated partners. Our strategy is to seek cost-efficient and effective actions for the protection of the Baltic Sea. While advancing on-going protection projects, we are also mapping possible new projects that can generate measurable impacts.”

The John Nurminen Foundation has been funding projects designed to protect the Baltic Sea since 2005. Over the last ten years these projects have reduced the phosphorus load entering the Baltic Sea annually by more than 2 000 tonnes. This corresponds to 40% of the total phosphorus load entering the Gulf of Finland annually. In 2015 the Foundation launched a new Local Fishing project and a NutriTrade project that aims to build up a voluntary nutrient emission trading system in the Baltic Sea’s catchment area.
